People want to see who they are connecting with, replying to or learning from. Imagine if Facebook didn't have the profile picture... it takes all of the fun out of it! People with a real picture can result in 10x more followers than accounts without one.
They say a picture is worth 1,000 words, in this case, maybe 1,000 followers!
